FUN FACTS

This is one of my favourites readings. I use it with the 5th grade to complement a unit about animals.  The students enjoy the reading because it’s short, simple but full of interesting facts.

Before reading:

  • I divide the class in small groups which look for different key words. Each group finds one word. The first in each group writes it on the board. This takes less time.
  • Then I show them the pictures of the animals and students make comments about them.

While reading:

  • They read the text and answer the questions individually.  I encourage them to guess meaning from context and consult a dictionary only where necessary.

After reading:

  • We read the text aloud, this time I focus on pronunciation.
  • We correct the questions*
  • The last two questions generate a speaking activity
  • This activity can be followed by a search in the internet for other peculiar animals: the thorny devil, giant soft-shelled turtle, aye-aye, etc.

*There are some interesting videos on youtube which could be shown after each paragraph is read.

SNOW MONKEYSSnow monkeys are Japanese macaques. They live in the high, snowy mountains of Japan. They have long fur because it is very cold in the mountains. They warm their fingers and toes in their fur.  Snow monkeys are not like other monkeys, snow monkeys take baths in hot springs.
THE BASENJIThis dog comes from Egypt. It has very big ears.  Basenjis are not like other dogs: they do not bark, but sometimes they laugh!
THE JABIRU BIRDThis black and white bird is from the Americas. You can find it from Mexico to Argentina. The jabiru is a funny bird because it never sings. It makes noises with its beak.
THE GLASS SNAKEThis snake is interesting because it is not a snake.  A glass snake is really a lizard. A snake cannot move its eyelids, but a glass snake can. Sometimes glass snakes are one-metre long.  If they lose their tails, they can grow new ones.
THE CHAMELEONChameleon is the Greek word for “little lion”. There are more than on hundred types of chameleons.  You can find them in lots of colours, brown, green, yellow, black and red.  Chameleons change their colours very fast.  They can change from brown to green in twenty seconds.
